A farm accident left one man dead in Linn County Wednesday morning.

Linn County Deputies, Sheriff’s Rescue, Central City Fire, and Center Point Ambulance responded to a farm accident at approximately 7:42 am Wednesday.  The accident happened in a field west of Whittier Road.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found 73-year-old Stephen Jay Martin of Springville was operating a field processor when he stopped to make adjustments to the equipment. According to a release from the Linn County Sherriff’s Office, it appeared that when Martin stopped to make the adjustment, he slipped and fell from the equipment.

The injury he sustained from the fall led to his death.

The incident was called in after the Martin family found him.

Farming is a dangerous occupation. Actually, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health considers it to be among the most hazardous industries with farmers being at high risk for both fatal and nonfatal accidents.

Students in Sioux City attended a training day on Monday for high school and college students that taught bin rescue and first aid techniques. One of the instructors, Sergeant Bluff fire chief Anthony Gaul spoke to KSCJ about the training.

So we're goanna be able to get to a lot of kids in our community that is around farming around ag and teaches them a little bit of safety that hopefully, they'll get here and never have to experience for real.

The students used a grain bin simulator from the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety where a student volunteer was “trapped”. The other students used tools such as a grain auger to rescue their “trapped” classmate.
