Courtlin’s Top 5 Favorite TV Shows of 2023 [LIST]

A lot of great shows released new seasons in 2023, so we're looking back at some of our favorites!

Before we get to my list, you should know that I spent most of my year watching true crime documentaries and episodes of 20/20. The fact that I watched anything else at all is kind of a miracle, really. I included one true crime docuseries on my list, but the rest of the shows are all fun and light-hearted because I needed to balance things out. You get it.

Here are five of my favorite shows that I watched in 2023:

Abbott Elementary

I fell in love with Abbott Elementary from the very first episode. The show is about a group of teachers working at an under-funded elementary school in Philadelphia, and it's shot mockumentary-style. It reminds me a lot of Parks & Rec, which is one of the reasons I like it so much.

The majority of the second season of Abbott Elementary aired in early 2023, with a third season on the way in February of 2024. It airs weekly on ABC, but can also be streamed on Hulu.

What We Do in the Shadows

If you like incredibly weird shows, then What We Do in the Shadows might be the perfect series for you! It's an FX show about a group of ancient vampires living in today's world, and, like Abbott Elementary, it's also shot mockumentary-style. But, unlike Abbott Elementary, it's definitely NOT family-friendly. There are all sorts of insane characters and creatures in the show, including werewolves, witches, possessed dolls, hellhounds, sirens, trolls, zombies, and more.

Season five of What We Do in the Shadows aired this past summer, and it will continue on with a sixth season sometime next year. You can stream all of the seasons on Hulu.

Shoresy

As a fan of the show Letterkenny, it makes sense that I would enjoy Shoresy. The show is a spinoff of Letterkenny that follows the character of Shoresy as he leads a AAA Canadian hockey team to victory. It's SUPER R-rated, though, so it's certainly not everyone's taste.

Season two of Shoresy just arrived on Hulu in October, but it's already been renewed for a third season in 2024. I can't wait!

Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God

Here's that one docuseries on the list that I mentioned earlier, and it's a DOOZY. It follows the now-deceased Amy Carlson, aka "Mother God," and her followers, the group known as "Love Has Won." The craziest part of the docuseries was the fact that the group kept Amy's body on display in their home long after she has passed. Also, I was expecting to see a bunch of interviews with former cult members in the series. That didn't happen. I was genuinely shocked to discover that almost all of the people interviewed are STILL IN THE CULT. Wild.

Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God has three episodes, and all of them are now streaming on Max.

Bob's Burgers

We have arrived at my ultimate comfort show. Bob's Burgers is one of those shows that I watch over and over and over and never get sick of. The animated series follows the ridiculous life of restaurant owner Bob Belcher and his family, and it's funny and light-hearted and super weird, which makes it incredibly easy to watch.

Bob's Burgers has been airing on Fox since 2011 and is still going strong. In fact, the most recent episode was just released on December 17th, with more to come in January. All 14 seasons are available to stream on Hulu.
