Countless people can't function without their morning cup of coffee. However, the prices sure aren't coming down anytime soon. A cup of coffee can cost as little as $1.50 to more than $6 depending on where you get it.

The website BetArizona decided to take a deep-dive into the menus of over 5,000 US coffee shops across the US in order to see which states are home to the highest (and lowest) average coffee prices.

Tis the season of pumpkin spice lattes, with everywhere from Wendy's to 7-Eleven, Dunkin, and McDonald's offering some variation of the popular concoction. BetArizona revealed that the average price for a venti pumpkin spice latte is about $6.45, which is a 23% increase from $5.25 in 2020 (and a whopping 93% increase from $3.35 in 2005)!

Here are the ten states with the lowest average coffee price:

RankStateAverage Price of a Coffee (All Sizes)
1Alabama$1.88
2Mississippi$1.99
3Arkansas$2.00
4Iowa$2.06
5West Virginia$2.09
6North Dakota$2.15
7Nebraska$2.19
8Indiana$2.21
9Oklahoma$2.23
10Kentucky$2.25

It could be worse for us in Iowa. As it turns out, Iowa has some of the lowest average coffee prices in the states. My guess is, if you consider the wealth of gas station franchises offering inexpensive cups of coffee on a regular basis, it makes sense that the average price is as low as it is.

Also, I had to do a double-take when I saw the average prize of a cup of coffee in 'Bama is only $1.88; the same with Mississippi having coffee for an average of $1.99.

Here are the states with the highest average coffee price:

RankStateAverage Price of a Coffee (All Sizes)
1Hawaii$3.76
2California$3.35
3Washington$3.09
4Alaska$2.91
5Arizona$2.88
6New York$2.87
7Massachusetts$2.82
8Connecticut$2.81
9Nevada$2.78
10New Jersey$2.77

While I do feel these numbers skew low, I'm not terribly surprised to see Hawaii and California top the list of most expensive cup of coffee (based on average price). Both states were also found to be the least friendly states for renters in another new survey too.
