Although the Waterloo Black Hawks topped the Tri-City Storm on Friday night, two former Tri-City skaters keyed a 4-2 Sioux Falls Stampede win against the Black Hawks at Young Arena Sunday.

After being acquired in recent weeks, Christian Horn and Garrett Cecere had a hand in each of Sioux Falls' goals, beginning at 7:10 of the first period.  Dennis Kravchenko sprang Horn for a breakaway from the blue line, and while cutting across the goalmouth, the Stampede’s new addition scored on a backhander.  Then on a power play with 8.9 seconds remaining before intermission, a cross-slot pass from C.J. Franlin to Zeb Knutson set up a goal from the left dot.  Cecere received the second assist.

Waterloo’s scoring opportunities in transition were limited throughout the early stages, but the Hawks cashed in when a two-on-two situation became a three-on-two at 10:11.  Alec McCrea jumped into the rush and was set up to beat David Jacobson low to the goalie’s blocker side by Tyler Sheehy and Drew Melanson.  Cal Petersen kept the Hawks within one, denying a Sioux Falls transition opportunity when he snared Louis Nanne’s breakaway shot with 40.9 seconds to go in the period.

After rallying to force overtime during the final minute of Saturday’s game in Dubuque, the Hawks completed another late third period comeback when Patrick Russell scored during a power play at 16:29.  However, this time Waterloo couldn’t make the even score stick; just over two minutes later, Cecere stepped across the blue line and fired a low shot into the net.  Horn added an empty net goal to cap the evening with 18 seconds left to before the final whistle.

Jacobson’s 38 saves yielded his eleventh road victory of the season.  Petersen made 24 stops.

The Hawks play their third home game in eight days Friday versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.  The Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup matchup begins at 7:05 p.m.  The first 1,000 fans in attendance will take home the next installment of 2013/14 Waterloo Black Hawks player cards, courtesy of Iowa Community Credit Union.  Tickets are available around the clock from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
