Considering all of the damage from Monday's storms that rolled across eastern Iowa, a lot of people will probably be digging over the next couple of months. Whether it'll be mending fences, fixing damaged homes, garages and sheds or re-planting trees.

Aug. 11 is Tuesday, and Iowa One Call hopes that the 8/11 date on the calendar will serve as a natural reminder for residents to call 811 prior to any digging project to have underground utility lines marked. In a press release, Iowa One Call mentions that with more people at home during the pandemic, and summer being a peak time to work on home improvement projects, it's more timely than ever that residents remember to dig safely. Besides, Iowa law requires people to make a free request 48 hours before digging to avoid damaging buried utilities.

Iowa One Call invites you to enjoy "digging" for Mike Rowe with their "811 Day Scavenger Hunt" contest: Where is Micro Mike Rowe? Look around on their website for "Micro" Mike Rowe, Mike's alter ego. Answers to the contest questions are found on the pages where you see micro Mike Rowe and throughout the website. Then complete the quiz here to be entered in a drawing for a $500 home improvement digital gift card! Entries can be made up until 8/28/2020, and the winner will be announced on 8/31/2020.

According to a press release: "On Aug. 11 and throughout the year, we remind homeowners and professional contractors alike to use the free Iowa One Call notification service before digging to reduce the risk of striking an underground utility line," said Ben Booth, Public Relations/Communications Manager for Iowa One Call.

Homeowners and contractors can either dial 811 or requests can be made online at Professional locators will then arrive at the digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, spray paint or both.

Safe digging and hopefully your project goes well!
