Two people have been hurt, one seriously, in an early morning apartment fire in Waterloo.

Fire crews were called to an apartment building in the 1700 block of Jefferson Street around 5 a.m. today (Friday, Feb. 19, 2016).

Occupants in the first floor apartment awoke to noises, and called the Waterloo Fire Department.

Those people were able to get out safely. However, they were unable to get to the resident above them; one person sustained some cuts trying to get to his neighbor.

Firefighters rescued the trapped resident from his bedroom, but he did receive some serious burns. The two injured men were taken to a local hospital for treatment; there was no word on their condition.

The fire was located in the living room of the apartment. Crews extinguished the blaze, which they don't believe was suspicious. The cause is under investigation.
