Like it or not, residents in Fairbank may be seeing wind turbines pop up in the area.

The City of Fairbank had filed an appeal to the Fayette County Zoning Board of Adjustment, claiming the board had misinterpreted whether wind turbines may be built in an agricultural district.

However, on Tuesday night, the board denied the appeal, citing that the zoning administrator's decision was legal.

According to Fairbank city officials, the ordinance was written in 1972, and makes no specific reference to the structures as they are constructed today.

City officials are worried that people will not want to move to the area and build new homes, when one of the main landscape features will be the 500-foot-tall windmills.

The company, Optimum Renewables, is planning to build three of the wind turbines in Fayette County, near Fairbank.

If the city appeals again, it would have to be in district court. City officials will be considering their options at the next Fairbank Council meeting.

Optimum Renewables, based in Des Moines, was also considering a site near Dunkerton, but withdrew its request for a special building permit in Black Hawk County on Tuesday.
