When you are out trick-or-treating this Halloween, you might see a teal colored pumpkin on some front steps or porches.

It’s called the Teal Pumpkin Project™ and it’s quickly becoming more popular and gaining national attention.

The Teal Pumpkin Project™, created by FARE (Food Allergy and research Education) is a great way for kids with food allergies to trick-or-treat without the fear of coming in contact with ingredients within candy that may give them an allergenic reaction.

Food allergies affect 1 in every 13 children, or roughly two in every classroom. That’s a lot of kids who might feel left out of the festivities.

A teal pumpkin  indicates that the home is safe for trick-or-treaters with food allergies and offers non-food treats, most of which are available at your neighborhood dollar store:

  • Glow sticks, bracelets, or necklaces
  • Pencils, pens, crayons or markers
  • Bubbles
  • Halloween erasers or pencil toppers
  • Mini Slinkies
  • Whistles, kazoos, or noisemakers
  • Bouncy balls
  • Finger puppets or novelty toys
  • Coins
  • Spider rings
  • Vampire fangs
  • Mini notepads
  • Playing cards
  • Bookmarks
  • Stickers

You can download a free sign to put on your porch to let trick-or-treaters know you are handing out safe treats for Halloween.
