Week 8 Area High School Football Schedule
It's week eight of the Iowa high school football season and several games involving teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa have district championship and/or playoff implications Friday night (Oct. 14, 2016).
The marquee match-up takes place in West Union, where North Fayette (7-0, 5-0) hosts La Porte City Union (7-0, 5-0) in a battle between the top two rated teams in Class-2A. The Knights hit the road looking to clinch the District 4 championship and a first-round playoff game at home. A victory by the host TigerHawks locks up a post-season berth, and puts them in the driver's seat for the crown heading into next week's game against Waukon (6-1, 4-1).
North Fayette Valley features a potent ground-attack that puts a lot of pressure on opposing defenses. The TigerHawks have completed only 24 passes this season, but seven have gone for touchdowns.
Also in Class-2A, Dike-New Hartford (5-2, 5-0) and Crestwood both secure district titles with victories on the road, while in Class-1A, Denver (7-0, 5-0) stakes claim to the Class-1A, District 2 crown with a victory at home against BCLUW.
There are three games with playoff implications involving area Class-A squads. Defending champion and No. 2 Gladbrook-Reinbeck (7-0, 5-0) takes its 17-game winning streak to Belle Plaine (6-1, 4-1) with an eye on sealing the District 5 title, while District 4 co-leaders Wapsie Valley (4-3, 4-1) and East Buchanan (5-2, 4-1) both try to avoid losses at home. The Warriors and Buccaneers are among three teams tied the top of the standings in a race that will likely be determined by the tie-breaking playoff point-system.
In eight-player football, No. 3 Turkey Valley (7-0, 4-0) and No. 9 Central Community of Elkader (5-2, 4-0) also lock up district titles with victories.
Week eight got an early start with Waterloo East (0-7, 0-4) playing at Cedar Rapids Washington (6-1, 2-1) Thursday night. The Trojans fell to the 7th-ranked (Class-4A) Warriors 63-14.
