The first of 10 top prizes of $10,000 available in the lottery’s “Moosletoe Doubler” holiday scratch game was claimed last week by a Waterloo woman.

Brenda Cummings said she used some lottery winnings from another scratch game to buy the Moosletoe Doubler ticket Nov. 8 at Hy-Vee Gas, 3700 University Ave. in Waterloo.
The 48-year-old small business owner said she scratched off her ticket before leaving the store and couldn’t believe what she saw.

“I paused,I looked at it again in disbelief and I started crying.” - Cummings told lottery employees the same day as she claimed her prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Cummings then had a store clerk double-check her work before she called her boyfriend to tell him her good news. Her boyfriend, however, was a bit skeptical.

“My boyfriend made me check the ticket over the phone with him on the line at the gas station,” she said. “He didn’t believe it.”

Cummings said she plans to use a majority of her winnings to pay bills and save the rest.

“I was beyond excited and relieved. This is great, especially for the holidays,” she said.
