If you see smoke rising from a Waterloo manhole, don't freak out. The city is just using smoke to test the sewer system.

The City of Waterloo, as part of its sewer maintenance program, will be undertaking a smoke testing program of its sanitary sewer system. The program consists of blowing smoke through the sanitary sewer system and observing for clear water entry points. The area being tested is south of Highway 20, east of Highway 63 and west of Ansborough Avenue. The program will begin on November 10th and will last for approximately 10 to 15 working days, weather permitting.

An informational handout will be delivered to affected addresses prior to an area being smoke tested. This handout will detail what the resident should do and who to contact with questions.
