Waterloo police are investigating a pair of mid-morning shootings that left one person injured and several suspects detained today (Thursday, May 12, 2016).

The two incidents of gunfire occurred at different locations in the city about 90 minutes apart.

The first happened just before 6:30 a.m. outside the Kwik Star convenience store at E. 11th and Franklin streets. Police said someone inside a vehicle was struck multiple times. The victim was transported to Unity Point-Allen Hospital in Waterloo, where he is listed in critical condition.

According to police, an off-duty Black Hawk County sheriff's deputy witnessed the shooting in the parking lot and requested assistance. Multiple officers arrived at the scene. They took one person into custody without incident.

Then, just after 8 a.m., officers responded to a second report of shots fired. Upon arrival, police found a home at 1210 Columbia St. and a vehicle parked nearby were both struck with bullets multiple times.

Police said witnesses gave them a description of a suspect vehicle, which officers stopped a few minutes later during a search of the area. Police detained four occupants inside the vehicle.

The two shootings are likely connected, police said.
