Authorities are investigating a fatal overnight shooting in Waterloo.

Police responded to a report of female being shot at 520 Elm Street shortly before 2 a.m. today (Sunday, October 19, 2014). When they arrived, the responding officers located a female in the basement of the home.

Authorities later identified the victim as Jazzmine Rembert, 17.

Police say Rembert appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was unresponsive. Waterloo Fire Rescue determined Rembert was deceased at the scene.

During the investigation, police arrested Quaderious Spates, 18. He was booked at the Black Hawk County jail on charges of possession of a weapon by a Felon and trafficking stolen weapons.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the state medical examiner in Ankeny on Monday.

The shooting remains under investigation. Police say no other information is available.
