Waterloo Man Sentenced in Shooting Death of Girl

A young Waterloo man will be spending his next ten years in prison for the death of a teenage girl, killed by a gunshot in the basement of a home last October.

19 year old Quaderious Spates had pleaded guilty last month to charges of involuntary manslaughter, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and trafficking in stolen weapons.

Spates told police that he bought the stolen handgun on the streets of Waterloo last fall.

He and 17 year old Jazzmine Rembert were in a basement bedroom of Spates' grandmother's home, when the two allegedly struggled with the gun, and it went off.

Rembert sustained a fatal wound to the head.

Spates fled and hid the weapon, but was ultimately arrested.

He has now been sentenced to ten years in prison, and must pay $150,000 in restitution.
