Waterloo Looking For New Waste Management Leader

The city of Waterloo is in need of a new Waste Management Services superintendent.

The mayor's office announced the job vacancy in a press release issued late Tuesday afternoon. The released stated that "Larry Smith is no longer employed by the City of Waterloo, effective Sept. 29, 2015."

Smith was reportedly fired by Mayor Buck Clark earlier in the day. Clark declined to discuss the reasons for Smith's dismissal.

"The City wishes him the best of luck in future endeavors and thanks him for his years of service," the released said.

Smith has been with the city of Waterloo since June 1, 1989. He took over as Waste Management Services superintendent in 2008, following the death of former department head Tim Shea.

In announcing Smith's departure, city officials indicated a nationwide search for his replacement will begin immediately.

Waste Management Services oversees Waterloo's sewage treatment plant, storm sewage maintenance, flood control and code enforcement.
