A Waterloo family has lost two pets in a house fire.

Crews were called to a home in the 300 block of Sunnyside Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire started on the stove and quickly spread, Waterloo Fire Rescue officials said. A resident tried to put out the blaze with a garden hose. She escaped without injury.

A dog and a pet bird were trapped inside, however, and died in the smoky fire. Crews attempted to save the dog by administering CPR, but the pet perished.

Officials said the fire caused considerable damage to the kitchen. There was smoke damage throughout the rest of the house.
