A busy Waterloo street has reopened traffic after a gas leak forced its closure earlier today (Wednesday, October 15, 2014).

Construction company workers, using an excavator, hit a two-inch natural gas pipe along Kimball Avenue just before 9 a.m.

No one was injured in the accident, but emergency crews blocked off area roads. Kimball Avenue was closed to traffic from Park Lane to San Marnan Drive for about 2 1/2 hours.

Mid-American Energy repaired the gas leak late this morning. Authorities reopened Kimball Avenue around 11:30 a.m.

According to sources, today's strong winds blew the gas out of the area. No evacuations were needed.

The work on Kimball Avenue is reconstruction project that's been ongoing for several weeks. Traffic on the four-lane road has been reduced to two lanes for several weeks because of the project.

This is the second time in less than a month that construction crews have struck a gas line in the area. A similar incident occurred on September 25th.
