Now that swollen waterways are receding in the Cedar Valley, city officials in Waterloo have re-opened most of the streets that were recently closed by flooding.

Heavily-used Ridgeway Avenue between Deere Road and Greyhound Drive is no longer under water, and normal traffic operations have also resumed on Katoski Drive (between Huntington and Black Hawk Roads) and Black Hawk Road between Huntington and Katoski Drive).

Black Hawk Creek, which caused the flooding, crested at about three feet above its 14-foot flood stage early Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 15, 2015). The water fell below the flood level early Thursday morning.

Although the creek is no longer topping its banks, two roads were still closed Thursday afternoon. Waterloo city officials said the Hope Martin Park levee gates remained shut, keeping Fletcher Ave. closed between University Ave. and U.S. Highway 63. Also, Ranchero Road was still blocked on the southern edge of Waterloo.

In neighboring Cedar Falls, a flood warning remains in effort for the Cedar River until early Sunday morning. Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is expected before the water level drops.

The river is expected to crest about two feet above its 88-foot flood stage on Friday morning.
