A $25 million bond referendum for Hawkeye Community College was overwhelmingly approved by voters in Northeast Iowa on Tuesday (February 3, 2015).

Voters in 10 area counties went to the polls and approved the measure by a 77-percent margin, with 3,463 saying “Yes” and 1,032 saying “No”. The bond referendum required 60-percent approval to pass.

The bond rate will be in effect for 10 years. The owner of a home valued at $100,000 will pay approximately $1.10 per month. The levy replaces an existing levy, which is expiring.

According to school officials, the bond issue would fund the following projects:

  • A new adult education center to replace the College’s Metro and Martin Luther King, Jr. Centers
  • A new health sciences technology center
  • Expand job training/educational opportunities at high schools and off-campus outreach centers
  • Renovation of Grundy Hall on the Waterloo campus

Hawkeye Community College serves all or parts of Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Fayette, Floyd, Grundy, and Tama counties.
