Authorities have confirmed a weekend drowning at an abandoned Chickasaw County quarry that's a popular place for swimming.

Sheriff Marty Hemann said Monday that Sam Hake, 17, died in an apparent swimming accident at Chickasaw Park near Ionia. His body was recovered from the quarry on Saturday (May 26, 2018).

Hake was finishing his junior year at Nashua-Plainfield High School, where counselors were available Monday morning. On Sunday, district administrators posted a statement about Hake's death on Facebook.

As KCRR.com reported exclusively on Saturday, emergency vehicles from numerous agencies converged at the park around 3:15 PM. Authorities were stopping all vehicles and identifying people leaving and entering the park. One law enforcement official said then that they were searching for a missing person, while another indicated that someone may have drowned in the park's quarry.

Hake's drowning at Chickasaw Park occurred nearly two years to the day when another high school student died in the same quarry. Christopher Balvanz, 18, of Hawkeye drown while swimming with friends on May 25, 2016, just days before his scheduled graduation from Sumner-Fredericksburg High School.
