Union Knights Win 2015 Class 2A Team Dual State Championship

The Union Knights defeated a four-time defending champion to claim the 2015 Iowa High School State Wrestling Class 2A Team Dual Championship.

In a battle of the Knights of the 'round table', or should we say mats, the Union Knights of LaPorte City faced off against the Assumption Knights of Davenport for the Class 2A Team Dual Championship on Wednesday, February 18 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Trailing 9-0 after the first two mathces. Union's Max Thomsen (145#) put the Knights on the board with a pin just 34-seconds into his match. Teal Lademann (152#) followed that up with another pin coming in the final mintue of regulation.

Trevor McLaughlin (160#) added to the Union Knights' total with a decision win that gave his team a 15-9 lead over Assumption.

Jacob Holschlag made it four straight wins for the team from LaPorte City with yet another pin coming 1:02 into his match.

After the first seven matches, Union lead 24-9, but that is when Assumption came roaring back. The Knights of Davenport would win the next three matches, and they found themselves just two points back of Union, 24-22.

Jon Hellman (106#) stopped Assumption's streak with a pin for Union at the 2:34 mark of his dual.

Derek Hoschlag (113#) would earn another win for Union to give his team a 33-22 lead with two matches remaining.

The Assumption Knights did not quite and won the next two matches, but Union would hold on for the win, 33-31.

Overall, through three matches during the Team Dual State Tournament, Union recorded 19 pins, and Max Thomsen score a pin in all three of his visits to the mat.
