Two unranked UNI Panthers wrestlers knocked off top-25 opponents in their debuts in the Panther lineup at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals on Sunday, November 15, 2015.

Senior Trevor Jauch took down No. 15 Jamel Hudson of Hostra, while Josh Alber beat Rutgers' No. 19 Anthony Giraldo.

"Alber beat a guy who beat him last year, so it's good to turn that around," said head coach Doug Schwab. "They found ways to win hard-fought matches that were tight."

Giraldo gave Alber his only major decision loss of the season when Alber wrestled unattached at the 2014 Midlands Championships.

UNI steamrolled Hofstra (39-3) before falling to No. 19 Oregon State (23-12) and No. 17 Rutgers (28-10).

"It certainly was a mixed bag with some really good things and some pretty rough things," said Schwab. "We have to create more opportunities, but it's a marathon. It's the first competition of the year. We are still four months away from the national competition. No national trophies have been given away yet."

Senior Blaize Cabell saw two top-10 opponents today and walked away with a decision over No. 8 Billy Smith of Rutgers.

"Blaize had three tough matches," said Schwab. "The thing I liked was he attacked. He continued to build his lead."

Alber and junior Dylan Peters both came out of the duals undefeated. Peters has started every season with the Panthers undefeated in the 125-pound weight class. He had 10 straight wins as a redshirt, nine consecutive falls as a redshirt freshman and 10 wins as a sophomore.

"We saw some things that need to be addressed, but that's why we compete," said Schwab. "We're certainly going to be tested throughout the year, but we'll be ready when it's time to compete at nationals."

NO. 25 UNI 39, HOFSTRA 3
Peters set the tone for the team in the first dual, picking up his 30th career fall to start the season. He moves up to seventh on the all-time list of most career falls by Panthers.

UNI got a forfeit at 133 pounds before Jauch would notch his first fall as a Panther. Jauch pinned Hudson early in the third period.
Gunnar Wolfensperger continued the Panther domination at 149 pounds with a tech fall.

Bryce Steiert was the final Panther to earn bonus points in the Hofstra match, earning an 11-1 major decision. Steiert is the first true freshman to start for the Panthers under Schwab, who is in his sixth year with UNI.

NO. 19 OREGON STATE 23, NO. 25 UNI 12
Peters' 1:40 of riding time gave him the edge he needed to earn a 3-2 decision over No. 12 Ronnie Bresser of Oregon State at 125 pounds.

Alber was sitting close to a earning a major decision at 133 pounds, but he gave up a late takedown to come away with an 8-4 decision.

Still scoreless in the second period of the 141-pound match, Jauch built up nearly two minutes of riding time before releasing Oregon State's Jack Hathaway. Jauch turned on the offense in the third when Hathaway chose to start in a neutral position, giving Jauch the escape point. Jauch would go on to beat the former NCAA qualifier, 5-1 with 1:40 in riding time.

Wolfensperger grabbed an escape early in the third. With riding time not a factor, he worked for a takedown to even the score, Delgado turned the tables to go on to win 7-3 to give Oregon State its first win of the match at 149 pounds.

OSU grabbed the next two weights until Kyle Lux racked up more than three minutes in riding time to regain the team lead and get the 5-2 decision at 174 pounds.

UNI was down 14-12 when Jared Bartel stepped up at 197 pounds. He snagged an early takedown and built 1:58 in riding time in the first period against No. 11 Cody Crawford, but Crawford would get the fall in 6:18 to secure the OSU win.

NO. 17 RUTGERS 28, NO. 25 UNI 10
Peters dominated his final match of the day and earned bonus points in his match at 125 pounds to give UNI the 4-0 lead.
At 133 pounds, an escape gave No. 19 Anthony Giraldo the lead, but two stall points and an escape gave Josh Alber the 3-1 decision at 133 pounds.

UNI would jump out to a 7-0 start before Rutgers would grab its first win at 141 pounds. Jauch fell 14-5 to All-American No. 8 Anthony Aschnault. Steiert took Richie Lewis into a tiebreaker before Lewis would win with an escape, 2-1.

Rutgers would go on to win the next seven until Cabell beat No. 8 Billy Smith by a 9-3 decision.

HAROLD NICHOLS OPEN
Five Panthers medaled at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames, Iowa. Heavyweight transfer JJ Everard took third, competing unattached. Jake Koethe (141 pounds), Max Thomsen (149 pounds) and Taylor Lujan (174 pounds) were fourth in their weight classes. Peter Stewart took fifth at 149 pounds.

"Sounded like some of our guys scrapped really well," said Schwab. "Some big teams were there. Iowa State had a lot of their top guys competing. Jake Koethe came back to beat a guy who beat him earlier in the tournament. So, it's always a positive when you have guys turn it around like that."

Koethe lost to ISU's John Meeks in the second round, but eventually knocked him out of the tournament en route to his fourth-place finish. Minnesota and Nebraska also brought part of their teams.
