A road construction project will close a portion of U.S. Highway 18 in northeast Iowa for the next several months, starting Monday (June 13, 2016).

According to officials at the Iowa Department of Transportation's New Hampton construction office, workers will be replacing the existing bridge over Haugh Creek in western Fayette County with an arch culvert. U.S. Highway 18 crosses the creek about a quarter-mile west of the intersection with Fayette County Road V-68. .

Due to the road work, U.S. 18 will be closed to through traffic between Fredericksburg and West Union until late October, weather permitting. During construction, traffic will be detoured using Chickasaw County Road V-56/Union Avenue, Fayette County Road B-44/210th Street, and Fayette County Road V-68/West Avenue.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
