Closing arguments are scheduled for today, in the sexual abuse trial of former Oelwein mayor Jason Manus.

The 37 year old Manus is charged with second degree sexual assault, for an incident involving a girl 6-9 years old, in 2012, in Manus' home in Oelwein.

In his first trial in May, moved from Fayette County to Chickasaw County, a jury acquitted him of third degree sex abuse involving a 14 year old girl, but deadlocked on the 2nd degree charge. The re-trial on that accusation was also moved, to Bremer County District Court in Waverly.

In his testimony yesterday (Thursday), Manus denied any sexual contact with the young girl. He claimed his arrest was politically motivated, and the victim's family was paid-off to make the allegations.

Manus resigned as Oelwein's mayor in August of last year, days after being arrested on the sex abuse charges.

Manus' wife and daughter also took the stand, and testified on his behalf.

The prosecution rested it's case Thursday; today, the jury will receive instructions, and closing arguments.

If convicted, Manus could be sentenced to 25 years in prison.
