An open house will be held next month to honor the newly named Dr. Donald E. Hanson-Jim D. Miller Track and Field at Waterloo East High School.

The event is scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2014, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the track near the school.

Later that evening, a dedication will take place during half-time of the Trojans' varsity football game against Dubuque Hempstead at Memorial Stadium.

Dr. Hanson was named head track coach at East in 1957 after building successful programs at Fairfax, Missouri, Coon Rapids and Colo, Iowa. He built East’s track program into a state power over the next 10 years.

Following a successful career as a teacher and coach in Waterloo, he served in district administration until his retirement in 1988.

Hanson passed away in 2012, but his impact will be felt by the East High School community for generations to come.

Miller took over Dr. Hanson’s classroom in 1967 and also replaced him as East's head track and field coach. He led the Trojans' program from 1967 to 1982 and retired from teaching in 1996.

East was favored to win the state track and field title four times during Miller's 15-year tenure as coach.
