The Waterloo Black Hawks didn't have many scoring chances in the third period Saturday, October 11, 2014, but they made their opportunities count. The Black Hawks rallied for a 6-4 road United States Hockey League (USHL) win against the Sioux Falls Stampede at Sanford Premier Center.

Phil Beauleau scored on Waterloo’s first of four shots during the final period, dashing to the net to flip in a transition goal set up by Sean MacTavish at 9:48. With under two minutes to play, Brock Boeser built the lead, scoring into an empty net from the blue line. Forty-four seconds later, Niko Hildenbrand flipped the puck high into the air from his own zone, and it slipped into the empty net at 19:17.

The late Hawks goals proved to be the difference, because Lawton Courtnall stuffed a shot between the pipes with a fraction less than 30 seconds to play.

The first goal in Sioux Falls’ new rink was scored at 9:29 of the opening period, four seconds after the Black Hawks’ first power play began.  Following a faceoff win, Brandon Montour’s shot was deflected into the net by Tyler Sheehy. The Stampede answered at 11:41, when a rebound bounced to Parker Toumie, and left with an open side, the forward knocked it into the open net.

Waterloo rallied back in front later in the period with two goals separated by 74 seconds; Sheehy fed a pass between his own skates from behind the net to Boeser in the slot, and the Hawks’ leading goal-scorer put Waterloo back in front at 12:17. Hildenbrand followed up with a rebound marker at 13:31.

It was all Sioux Falls in the second, and two goals in a span of less than two minutes brought the count even. Bearing toward the goalmouth on a power play at 11:00, Dakota Joshua lifted a shot into the net. He was assisted by Tyler Nanne, who scored himself at 12:57, shooting from the high slot low to the stick side.

The Hawks are now off until Friday when they host the Cedar RapidsRoughRiders in a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup contest. The first 1,000 fans in attendance for the 7:05 affair will receive a 2014/15 schedule poster from Karen’s Print Rite. It will also be the final time the team will wear their 2014 Breast Cancer Awareness jerseys, presented by Great Clips, which will be auctioned after the game to benefit Beyond Pink TEAM.
