It’s nice to be reminded that Shane Black has a new movie hitting theaters soon. And in case you forgot, a new trailer for The Nice Guys has arrived, teasing Black’s noir action-comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as a mismatched investigative team who get in way over their heads while trying to solve the disappearance of a young woman. That plot sounds a bit serious, but the latest trailer promises it’s anything but. (Okay, maybe it’s a little serious. Just a little.)

After taking a brief superhero intermission with Iron Man 3, Black returns to his action-comedy and noir roots with The Nice Guys, starring Gosling as a witless private investigator who teams up with Crowe’s professional enforcer to solve two seemingly unrelated cases that lead them deep into a web of conspiracy. Again, that sounds dark, but as you can see in the latest trailer, Black’s new film packs plenty of humor — particularly when it comes to Gosling’s character, who seems like kind of a weenie.

“The Nice Guys” takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.

The Nice Guys also stars Kim Basinger, Matt Bomer and The Leftovers’ Margaret Qualley, and hits theaters on May 20.
