‘The Deuce’ Becomes ‘The Wire’ of the Sex Trade in Full Trailer

It’s easy to gawk at HBO’s The Deuce dropping a double-dose of James Franco, but the new series from The Wire creator David Simon is worthy of the legacy. See the ins and outs of the ‘70s New York City sex trade, from the streets, to the cameras and the precincts in a full trailer.

Seeing as Sunday’s Game of Thrones had a dearth of intimacy, HBO released its longest look yet at The Deuce before its September 10 premiere. In it, we see that old Wire standby of those on the street hustling for cash, which reverberates in different corners of the city, everywhere from the police to the press.

Developed with Simon’s frequent collaborator George Pelecanos, The Deuce follows the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s. Franco plays twin porn kings Vincent and Frankie Martino, with Maggie Gyllenhaal playing Eileen “Candy” Merrell, a Times Square hooker with entrepreneurial aspirations.

Its pilot directed by Michelle MacLaren, the series seeks to chronicle “the rough-and-tumble world that existed in midtown Manhattan until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic and a rejuvenated real estate market ended the bawdy turbulence.” Also starring are The Leftovers alum Emily Meade, Anwan Glover, Lawrence Gilliard Jr, Michael Rispoli, Chris Bauer, David Krumholtz, Ralph Macchio, Zoe Kazan, Garry Pastore and more.

The first season will consist of eight episodes (three of which Franco directed), so stay tuned for more on The Deuce.
