A young Northeast Iowa hunter is in critical condition, after accidentally being impaled on his rifle.

The accident was reported to the Fayette County Sheriff at about 1pm Sunday. 17 year old Daniel Gibbs of West Union had been squirrel hunting with a friend, northeast of West Union, on private property along Great River Road.

Gibbs apparently tripped over a log, and impaled the rifle barrel into his neck. The gun did not go off, but the injury was severe.

Gibbs was first taken to the West Union hospital, then airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, where he was last listed in critical condition.

The Fayette County Sheriff has contacted the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in regard to the investigation.
