The same summer feeding program that launched in Waterloo will now be available to children in Cedar Falls thanks to Sartori Memorial Hospital. Cedar Falls fell just shy of eligibility requirements for the summer feeding program based on the number of kids receiving free or reduced lunch. Sartori has stepped up to ensure the Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Boys & Girls Club of the Cedar Valley could provide summer meals at Holmes Junior High in Cedar Falls, which will begin Monday, July 11.

“Food insecurity can have a major impact on children when it comes to their overall health – not only because lack of food impacts their health, but it can cause stress for a child as well. When we learned funding was not available to support this program in Cedar Falls, we were happy to help.” - Mary Jo Kavalier, site administrator at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

More than $5,000 of donated funds will allow the NEIFB to provide a meal at no charge for all children in Cedar Falls regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The funds will also cover the cost for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley to provide activities after lunch such as crafts, gardening, recreation and learning.

“The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is thankful to partner with Sartori to help provide a summer feeding site for kids in Cedar Falls,” stated Barbara Prather, Executive Director of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. “In doing so, they are providing a service to the community that hasn’t been there in the past, and together, we are ensuring kids are fed all summer long. We appreciate the support and what it enables us to do.” “I’m very pleased there will finally be a summer feeding program in Cedar Falls and I’m looking forward to seeing what a success it will be this summer.

Between the healthy meals and quality programming, this will be a great new resource for families,” said Nicole Recker, Director of Operations for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley. The new site in Cedar Falls is: Holmes Jr. High 505 Holmes Drive July 11 – August 12, Monday through Thursday 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
