Five Northeast Iowa students are now being charged with sexually assaulting another student.

The investigation began on Jan. 15, when Winneshiek County sheriff's officials were notified of two separate assault incidents: one at South Winneshiek High School in Calmar, and the other in a rural area near Fort Atkinson. The victim in both cases was a South Winneshiek student.

One of the accused students in the case, Braxton Smith, has been charged in adult court with aggravate assault with intent to commit sexual assault. The other four students are minors and were referred to juvenile court.

Due to a conflict of interest, the case was transferred to the Howard County Attorney. The case is now being handling by the Allamakee County Attorney.
