A student is accused of setting a fire that damaged Bunger Middle School in Evansdale last month.

Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock says a 14-year-old juvenile from Waterloo has been taken into custody. She is charged with first-degree arson in connection with the Octeber 22nd  fire.

The blaze broke out in a girl's bathroom. While the fire damage was contained to that area, nearly half of the school received extensive smoke damage.

The fire forced the evacuation of nearly 400 students and 50 faculty members. Ultimately, classes had to be cancelled for the rest of that day.

Smock says the accused juvenile is a registered student at Bunger.

The case has been sent to the juvenile court system.
