On this day in rock history, Jimi Hendrix played his last-ever concert at the Open Air Love & Peace Festival in Fehmarn, Germany. Hendrix was found dead 12 days later.

The 1989 MTV Video Music Awards gave us classic rock fans plenty of reasons to tune in. Neil Young's clip for "This Note's for You," which the network had briefly banned, took home the video of the year award. Elvis Costello, U2, Living Colour and Guns N' Roses also won awards, while the program featured performances by Bon Jovi, the Rolling Stones, Def Leppard and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (with a guest appearance by Axl Rose).

But it wasn't all sunshine and lollipops backstage. Motley Crue's Vince Neil punched Izzy Stradlin in the face. Reportedly, this was payback for Stradlin hitting Neil's then-wife at a Los Angeles club a few weeks prior.

Meanwhile, Judas Priest released their debut, Rocka Rolla. It showed them developing the singular sound that they would, within a few years, ride to metal glory. And we also wish a happy birthday to Roger Waters, the former Pink Floyd bassist and mastermind behind The Wall.

Sadly, this was also the day that Tom Fogerty, rhythm guitarist for Creedence Clearwater Revival died of AIDS-related complications at the age of 48.
