Sean Spicer a Good Sport About SNL’s Melissa McCarthy Impression

SNL is no stranger to the current White House’s disdain for Alec Baldwin’s Trump impression (probably why we’re seeing it more and more), though the series trotted out another unexpected addition over the weekend with Melissa McCarthy’s Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Thankfully, the real Spicer is a much better sport about it than his boss.

Over the weekend, former SNL host McCarthy joined Kristen Stewart’s debut as an over-aggressive, prop-using parody of Spicer, whose own defense of Trump in press briefings has been widely ridiculed. McCarthy nailed the absurd back-and-forth jabs, but according to Spicer himself and Extra, the gum-chewing could use work:

Spicer told “Extra” exclusively he felt the impression was a little exaggerated. His advice was that McCarthy “needs to slow down on the gum chewing; way too many pieces in there.” Though he thought it was a really “funny” show, he felt that McCarthy “could dial back” a bit.

Of course, Spicer’s statement stands in stark contrast to Trump’s take on his own impression, dubbed “not funny” and “totally biased” in various tweets. Spicer, as you might imagine, agrees with his boss:

Alec has gone from funny to mean, and that’s unfortunate. ‘SNL’ used to be really funny. There’s a streak of meanness now that they’ve crossed over to mean.

One imagines Baldwin’s Trump will have at least some presence in the ranking SNL host’s 17th full outing this weekend, but will McCarthy reprise her role? Give it a few days, and Spicer will give SNL a reason.
