School bond issues to finance facility projects are on the ballot in two area school districts today (Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016).

Voters who live in the Waterloo Schools boundary are be asked to approve a $47 million funding plan for a proposed career center and high school renovations. The must decide whether to issue general obligation bonds to build a Career Technical Education (CTE) Center adjacent to Central Middle School, which would offer 30 new career choices for students. The estimated cost to build the proposed center is $35 million.

District officials also want to spend $12 million — divided equally — on planned renovations at East and West High Schools.

Polls in the Waterloo District opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. A 60-percent voter approval rate is required for the measure to pass.

In Denver, approval of a $10.3 million referendum would generate funds to build a new gymnasium and performing arts facility on the city's southwest side adjacent to the district's athletic complex. The proposed project also includes a weight room and walking/running track.

The ballot issue is virtually the same one voters narrowly defeated last June. Election results showed that last year's measure garnered 59.1-percent support, but needed 60-percent voter approval to pass.

Polls in Denver are open from noon until 8 p.m., which is a change from the previously announced 7 a.m. poll-opening time. Because of expected near-blizzard conditions today, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate on Monday announced an emergency declaration to delay the opening of the voting sites in Bremer County.
