Waterloo police are warning the public of a possible scam involving the sale of magazines.

According to authorities, someone is attempting to sell subscriptions to local residents on the belief that the proceeds will benefit a legitimate organization. The person or persons claim to be raising money for House of Hope in Waterloo, a non-profit transitional program for homeless single women with children.

Waterloo police have comfirmed that the fund-raising attempt is a fraud. According to representatives of House of Hope, the organization is not currently involved in a magazine sale fundraiser.

Anyone who encounters an individual or a group of people attempting to do this type of activity should report the incident to local authorities, Waterloo police said.

Before making a donation to any fundraiser, residents should always attempt to verify these types of sales through either the actual company, business, or group. Residents can also check with the city to see if a group or business has the appropriate permit for such activities.
