The Waterloo city council has a new member following a special election to fill an open seat on Tuesday (July 12, 2016).

Ward One residents went to the polls to choose a representative to replace David Jones, who resigned from the council in April when he took a new job. Jones’ departure has resulted in tie votes on several key issues in Waterloo in recent weeks. Filling the vacancy is expected to break the gridlock among the current council members.

Unofficial results show Tom Powers won Tuesday's election by 50 votes over Margaret Klein, 787 to 737. The result is pending an official canvass by the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors, which is expected to finalized the election Thursday afternoon.
