Authorities have identified the drivers involved in a fatal two-vehicle accident in Waterloo Monday morning (July 11, 2016).

According to Waterloo police, Kenneth Bienfang, 87, of Denver, was killed when the van he was driving was struck by a Freightliner tractor-trailer at the intersection of Dysart and East Orange Roads. The driver of the Freightliner was Gerald Cox, 38, of Berea, Ky.

Investigating officers said Bienfang was northbound on Dysart Road and began a left turn after stopping at the stop sign. During the turn onto Orange Road, Bienfang's van was struck by the southbound Freightliner, which failed to stop at the intersection.

Bienfang suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Waterloo hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cox received minor injuries and was cited for failure to stop at the stop sign.

Monday's accident, which occurred around 10 a.m., remains under investigation.
