Oelwein Schools had to be placed on lockdown, as police were pursuing a person in mental distress yesterday (Thursday, Sept. 9).
The incident began just before 11am Thursday, when Oelwein Police were called to the 1100 block of 1st Street NE, on the report of a subject in mental distress.

As officers pursued, the person fled on foot south, toward the Oelwein Middle School.

As a precaution, all of the Oelwein School buildings were placed on modified lockdown.

The subject, whose name was not released, was later found and detained; the person was then taken to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein for an evaluation.
