Hundreds of Waterloo residents are joining together in an effort to end a string of recent shooting incidents in the city, the latest of which claimed a 15-year-old girl over the weekend.

A diverse group of nearly 200 local residents marched in solidarity through a Waterloo neighborhood Sunday night (May 17, 2015). Jointly, they called for the end of the violence that is giving the city a bad reputation.

The latest incident occurred Friday night, when Jykeria Coffer, 15, was shot and killed by her younger brother.

Waterloo police arrested Diyrun Coffer, 14, shortly after the fatal shooting at 908 Broadway Street. He's charged with involuntary manslaughter, which indicates the shooting death was accidental.

Diyrun Coffer is also charged with first-degree burglary and trafficking in stolen weapons. Earlier Friday, he allegedly stole the handgun that was used in the fatal shooting.

According to court records, police also arrested a second 14-year-old boy on a first-degree burglary charge in connection with the earlier theft.

Jykeria Coffer is the second teenager girl shot to death in Waterloo in the past seven months. Last October, Jazzmine Rembert died after she was shot in the head inside a home in the 500 block of Elm Street.

In April, a four-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen after a bullet penatrated the exterior wall of a home at 1641 Mulberry Street. The boy was inside playing when the shooting incident occurred. The boy survived his injuries following surgery.

Sunday night's march in Waterloo started at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. The group walked in unison down Adams Street to Sullivan Park, where a peace rally was held.

The peace march was the first of eight that are planned in the city over the next several weeks.
