Authorities are investigating a two-vehicle accident that has now turned fatal in Waterloo.

The crash involving a minivan and pick-up happened at a downtown intersection just after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2017). According to police, several people were injured when a minivan and pick-up collided at East First and Sycamore streets, near the Waterloo Post Office.

Police said occupants of both vehicles sustained injuries. Initial reports indicated at least five people -- four of them children -- were hurt in the mishap, and the injuries to one victim appeared to be life-threatening.

Thursday morning, Waterloo police confirmed that the victim who suffered the most serious injuries later died.

Few details about the crash have been released.

The Iowa State Patrol is assisting Waterloo police in the investigation.
