A high-speed chase in northeast Iowa ended with the arrest of a Florida murder suspect north of Cedar Falls on Thursday (April 5, 2018).

Devon Cooke, 21, of Miami, was booked into the Chickasaw County jail on multiple charges following the pursuit on U.S. Highway 218. A press release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety said Cooke is awaiting extradition to Dade County, Fla., where he's wanted for second-degree murder.

According to the press release, Iowa State Patrol troopers attempted to stop a vehicle that was speeding near Nashua around 9:30 AM. The driver fled and the pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Officials said the fleeing vehicle drove into oncoming traffic near Waverly, going the wrong direction in the northbound lanes. The pursuit ended near Janesville after authorities deployed stop sticks, which deflated the vehicle's tires. The driver was apprehended in a field, following a brief foot chase.

Authorities identified Cooke as the driver. He was taken into custody on the following charges: first-degree operating while intoxicated (OWI), felony eluding, assault on a peace officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to deliver, failure to affix drug tax stamp, and multiple traffic violations.

Several agencies were involved in the pursuit. Assisting the Iowa State Patrol were officers from the Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement; sheriff's officials from Black Hawk, Bremer and Chickasaw counties; and Janesville police.
