When the North Fayette and Valley Community High School football teams combined forces prior to the 2013 season, the consolidation brought two strong programs together.

Today, that program -- now known as North Fayette Valley -- is celebrating a state championship.

The TigerHawks (13-1) completed their season with a 14-10 victory over Spirit Lake (12-2) in the Class-2A title game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls late this afternoon (Thursday, November 21, 2014).

The championship is the second being celebrated in West Union, but the first in 22 years. North Fayette won the Class-2A crown in 1992.

North Fayette Valley dominated the game statistically, despite the close score. The TigerHawks owned a big advantage in time of possession -- 30:06 to 17:54 -- and rolled up 300 yards of total offense while limiting Sioux Center to 178. North Fayette Valley ran 65 plays, 26 more than the Warriors.

The North Fayette Valley offense took control of the game early in the fourth quarter, then the defense stood strong to secure the win.

Josh Mackey scored both touchdowns for the TigerHawks, while running for 140 yards on 39 carries. His second TD on a two-yard run with 6:03 left, gave North Fayette Valley an advantage it would not relinquish.

Sioux Center put together a nine-play, 36-yard drive on its ensuing possession. The Warriors converted a 4th-and-one while marching into TigerHawk territory, but their drive stalled 29-yards short of the end zone. North Fayette Valley took possession with 1:17 left and ran out the clock.

For much of the day, the outcome could have gone either way.

Sioux Center scored on the game's opening possession to take an early 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Their only other score was a 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter that followed a North Fayette Valley fumble.

The field goal snapped a 7-7 tie that resulted from Mackey's score -- a one-yard run midway through the second quarter.

Quarterback Trevor Hurd attempted only five passes in the game for North Fayette Valley, completing four of them for 100 yards.

The championship is the first for TigerHawks' Head Coach Bob Lape in six trips to the playoffs.
