#22 UNI Wrestling Dominates #3 Iowa Central CC, 38-6-VIDEOS

The University of Northern Iowa Panthers wrestling team opened its home dual season with a 38-6 win over No. 3 Iowa Central Saturday, November 29, 2014 in the West Gym.

“Anytime you go out and compete and win, it builds confidence,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “We put guys away. You like to see that. We preach bonus points, and we got quite a few today. It was great to get back in front of a home crowd, so we appreciate that support.”

The Panthers blazed ahead with three straight first-period falls from No. 6 Dylan Peters, Leighton Gaul and Jake Hodges.

Peters defended his perfect record and got his fifth first-period fall of the season in 29 seconds. Peters improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in duals at 125 pounds (Video Below).

Gaul made his first dual appearance at 133 pounds for the Panthers. He tied his season’s quickest fall, pinning Tyler Miler in 1:43 (Video Below).

The Panthers continued to roll with a fall from Jake Hodges at 141 pounds. Hodges pinned No. 7 Clay Walker in 2:50 (Video Below).

Zach Witte gave the Panthers their fourth bonus point win, with a 16-6 major decision over No. 9 Teddie Harvey.

The Panthers got its fourth fall of the day with No. 12 Cooper Moore at 165 pounds over Ty McLeod. It was his quickest fall of the season at 1:24. Moore remains undefeated in duals, improving to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in duals (Video Below).

Curt Maas and Kyle Lux extended UNI’s lead with two decision. Maas protected his perfect record against No. 5 Jake Meehan. He improved to 8-0 overall, 3-0 in duals.

Blaize Cabell, ranked 15th in the nation, topped off the Panthers’ win with a major decision win, scoring 21 points on Iowa Central’s Vinny Harvey. Cabell stayed perfect in duals, improving to 3-0 (Video Below).

Iowa Central got its first win with a decision at 157 pounds from No. 2 Richie Lewis and grabbed another decision at 197 pounds from No. 8 Patrick Downey.

UNI improves to 2-1 for duals, and Iowa Central falls to 2-2.

The Panthers head to the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dec. 5-6.

“It’s a really good tournament, so our guys will be tested,” said Schwab. “We will see where we are at individually, and our guys have a chance to make a name for themselves.”

UNI returns home for the UNI Open Dec. 13. Matches will get underway at 9 a.m. in the UNI-Dome.
