Ahhh, it's National Unfriend Day. It's a day to look at your Facebook friends and decide who stays and who goes.

Fortunately for me, I got out of the Facebook sewer a while back. Unfriending happens face-to-face in my world, or I just ignore all calls, texts and emails from those who need to be swiped from my life. So, how will you handle this?

Here's some history and facts for today:

  • Jimmy Kimmel invented this holiday in 2010
  • 55% of people say their biggest social media pet peeve is having someone ask them to unfriend an ex (match.com)
  • 42% of people unfriend their ex on Facebook or stop following them on Twitter within a month of breaking up (Daily Mail)
  • 12% of Facebook users have been asked by a friend (35%) or current (23%) or former (12%) spouse or partner to unfriend someone else (Pew Research Center)
  • 33% of Facebook teens are ready to unfriend their parents while twice as many try to avoid them on the site. (AOL)
  • Only 25% of your Facebook friends are actual friends (Metro)

Unfriending Guidelines according to Facebook:

  • You should unfriend someone if you wouldn't loan them $50.
  • You should unfriend someone if you would invite them to your birthday party.
  • You should unfriend someone if you wouldn't cry if they got hit by a bus

So there you have it. Get on Facebook and start pissing people off, because they will be mad, for some reason.
