One of two Younkers department stores in the Cedar Valley is closing.

The location at College Square Mall in Cedar Falls is expected be shuttered by April, parent company The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., announced in a press release on Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2018). Corporate officials said the Younkers at Crossroads Center in Waterloo will remain open.

"As part of the comprehensive turnaround plan we announced in November, we are taking the next steps in our efforts to move forward with a more productive store footprint," said Bill Tracy, president and chief executive officer for The Bon-Ton Stores. "Including other recently announced store closures, we expect to close a total of 47 stores in early 2018. "

Bon-Ton is shuttering stores in 24 states, including another in eastern Iowa. Also on the list is Younkers at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids.

According to the press release, Bon-Ton's store-closing sales are expected to begin as soon as Feb. 1 and run for approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Associates at the impacted locations will have to the opportunity to interview for positions at other company-owned stores.

The Cedar Falls Younkers isn't the only area retailer closing this spring. In January, Sears Holding Corporation announced plans to shutter the Sears store at Crossroads Center in Waterloo.
