A traffic accident involving an area police officer has taken the life of a Northeast Iowa man.


It happened at about 3pm Monday (July 17) at the intersection of Highways 150 and 18 in West Union.

23 year old Officer Bryson Hennigar of West Union, was driving a West Union Police vehicle north from the intersection, in emergency status.

A pickup, driven by 83 year old Willys Fritz of West Union, failed to yield from a stop sign at the nearby Quillins parking lot, and collided with the police SUV.

Fritz was pronounced dead from his injuries; Officer Hennigar was treated and released.

The Iowa State Patrol, which investigated the accident, noted that neither driver was wearing their seatbelt.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Fayette County Sheriff and West Union Fire and Rescue.
