A major highway intersection in Cedar Falls is scheduled to close overnight, starting late Sunday (Nov. 18, 2018).

As part of an on-going construction project, Iowa Highway 58 and Viking Road will be shutdown from 9 PM to 6 AM on Monday. The closure is necessary for signal and traffic control work to facilitate the switch of northbound traffic on the new ramp pavement over the winter months, both state and city officials said.

Iowa 58 will be closed between Ridgeway Ave. and Greenhill Road. Viking Road will be closed between Nordic Drive and Andrea Drive. During the closure, motorists will be detoured to Hudson Road using Ridgeway Ave. and Greenhill Road.

For access to the businesses on Viking Road east of Iowa 58, motorists will be detoured to Prairie Parkway and Cedar Heights Drive.

The construction work that's taking place at the intersection of Iowa 58 and Viking Road began in March and expected to take two years to complete. The Iowa Department of Transportation is building an interchange at the heavily-congested intersection, where officials have responded to 74 crashes over the past three years.

According to design plans, the $32.1 million project includes adding an underpass to carry Iowa 58 traffic beneath Viking Road.
