Monday night's (May 30) storms may be to blame for a fire that destroyed an Oelwein home.

Fire fighters were called out at around 10pm to the residence at 812 North Frederick, a house rented by Missy Spencer, and owned by Lee Buhr.

Spencer told authorities that following a lightning strike, smoke starting coming from the northwest corner of the home's attic.

All of the residents were able to get out unharmed; there were also numerous pets in the home.

There was considerable damage to the structure.

Fire crews were on scene until about 4am this (Tuesday, May 31) morning.

An estimate on the damage was not available.

Although lightning is speculated to have started the blaze, the exact cause remains under investigation.
