Authorities are assuring area residents that a large snake spotted in nearby southwest Wisconsin is not a threat to the public.
At about 5:30pm Sunday (May 22), the Grant County Sheriff's Office received a report of a large snake that was crossing Highway 61, in the Village of Dickeyville. The snake was as long as the width of both lanes of the highway.

At first, witnesses said they believed the animal was some kind of python; as a precaution, authorities cautioned area residents to watch their children and pets if they go outside, and call the sheriff if the snake is seen.

The next day, a resident of Dickeyville was able to get a photograph of the reptile, and it was determined the animal was a very large bull snake, which is native to the Grant County, Wisconsin area; the bull snake is not a threat to humans.

The snake was estimated to be between 50" and 70" long.
